Having been an atheist for most of my life, I've heard every possible reaction to telling people my faith, from "Me too!", through "Are you sure?", all the way to my all-time favorite "Most kids [I was about 13 or so at the time] go through this phase. Don't worry, though - I'll pray for you until you see the light again.". Despite all that, Marge's reaction still appalls me. She may not agree with her daughter's decision, but she should at least be supportive, and she certainly shouldn't pretend to be God, withhold food or bribe her to return to what she considers to be the one true faith. I was raised Christian, and I tried all the major world religions before I realized I simply didn't believe in a deity, and my family were extremely supportive of my choices, because they wanted me to do what I felt was right, instead of pressuring me into going with what they believed because of their strictly Christian upbringings. Marge is portrayed as a fundamentalist, making it one of the few episodes in which you're made to strongly dislike her.

Ned Flanders really does need to lighten up! No Religion should state that you'll go to Hell if you don't follow that Religion - otherwise everyone would go to Hell!

Religion is not about convincing people that your Religion is right and condemning anyone who thinks otherwise - it's about having a concept of what's right and what's wrong. Sure, there are certain vices that some Religions forbid and others permit, but in terms of general standards and morals their teachings should pretty much be the same - such as don't kill people, don't steal and treat others with respect.

Lenny: Who likes short-shorts?
Carl: I like short-shorts.
Richard Gere: Those guys are way off.
This part was the funniest in the whole show in my opinion.
Thanks for uploading it =)

I have a lot of christian friends and and I have to say that they can be very narrow minded when it comes to other religions.

loves_lisa17: There are a lot of religions out there and saying that the only right one is Christianity is wrong from my point of view. Thats what I like about Buddhism they are not trying to convert anybody they respect other religions as long as they are based on love and compassion (took these words from the show :D)

I think this is one of the greatest episodes ever. I know many might disagree, but it I totally agree with SoloWingPixy. Everyone should be able to be allowed to be whatever religion they choose. I can give you a simpler example; your family all wear blue shirts. Does it really mean YOU need to wear a blue shirt? Doesn't make much sense, but I know that people should have a right to choose what to believe in. Also, Lisa doesn't go to Hell. Watch the episode Bible Stories. The Simpsons fall asleep in church and when they wake up, the apocalypse has begun. Also, when Lisa is lifted into the sky to go into Heaven, Homer reaches out to her leg and says, "Where do you think you're going, Missy?" and a doorway opens to Hell and Lisa is forced to follow them.

@ Antipop: But this particular cartoon usually bases its storylines on real world issues, religion being one of them. I'm glad that Marge and Homer seem to be the more right-sided members of the family (Homer shakes his fist at liberals, has homophobia, etc., and Marge takes her religion seriously, and isn't so narrow-minded compared to Lisa; look at the "Angel Episode").

I believe in tolerance, but I certainly would think twice before changing my religion, the basis of my beliefs about what life is supposed to be. Lisa just got angry because of ONE case of the commercialization of Christianity. If anything, the media seems to be trying to stay AWAY from religion these days, and for good reason (except for Christmas, of course; that's one occasion I hate to have secularized). If there's one thing that Christianity doesn't mix well with, it's popular music.
