Having been an atheist for most of my life, I've heard every possible reaction to telling people my faith, from "Me too!", through "Are you sure?", all the way to my all-time favorite "Most kids [I was about 13 or so at the time] go through this phase. Don't worry, though - I'll pray for you until you see the light again.". Despite all that, Marge's reaction still appalls me. She may not agree with her daughter's decision, but she should at least be supportive, and she certainly shouldn't pretend to be God, withhold food or bribe her to return to what she considers to be the one true faith. I was raised Christian, and I tried all the major world religions before I realized I simply didn't believe in a deity, and my family were extremely supportive of my choices, because they wanted me to do what I felt was right, instead of pressuring me into going with what they believed because of their strictly Christian upbringings. Marge is portrayed as a fundamentalist, making it one of the few episodes in which you're made to strongly dislike her.

Ned Flanders really does need to lighten up! No Religion should state that you'll go to Hell if you don't follow that Religion - otherwise everyone would go to Hell!

Religion is not about convincing people that your Religion is right and condemning anyone who thinks otherwise - it's about having a concept of what's right and what's wrong. Sure, there are certain vices that some Religions forbid and others permit, but in terms of general standards and morals their teachings should pretty much be the same - such as don't kill people, don't steal and treat others with respect.

This part was the funniest in the whole show in my opinion.

I have a lot of christian friends and and I have to say that they can be very narrow minded when it comes to other religions.

loves_lisa17: There are a lot of religions out there and saying that the only right one is Christianity is wrong from my point of view. Thats what I like about Buddhism they are not trying to convert anybody they respect other religions as long as they are based on love and compassion (took these words from the show :D)

I think this is one of the greatest episodes ever. I know many might disagree, but it I totally agree with SoloWingPixy. Everyone should be able to be allowed to be whatever religion they choose. I can give you a simpler example; your family all wear blue shirts. Does it really mean YOU need to wear a blue shirt? Doesn't make much sense, but I know that people should have a right to choose what to believe in. Also, Lisa doesn't go to Hell. Watch the episode Bible Stories. The Simpsons fall asleep in church and when they wake up, the apocalypse has begun. Also, when Lisa is lifted into the sky to go into Heaven, Homer reaches out to her leg and says, "Where do you think you're going, Missy?" and a doorway opens to Hell and Lisa is forced to follow them.

@ Antipop: But this particular cartoon usually bases its storylines on real world issues, religion being one of them. I'm glad that Marge and Homer seem to be the more right-sided members of the family (Homer shakes his fist at liberals, has homophobia, etc., and Marge takes her religion seriously, and isn't so narrow-minded compared to Lisa; look at the "Angel Episode").

I believe in tolerance, but I certainly would think twice before changing my religion, the basis of my beliefs about what life is supposed to be. Lisa just got angry because of ONE case of the commercialization of Christianity. If anything, the media seems to be trying to stay AWAY from religion these days, and for good reason (except for Christmas, of course; that's one occasion I hate to have secularized). If there's one thing that Christianity doesn't mix well with, it's popular music.

dear admin, IMO these non simpsons related comments spoil the show for everyone for being a jerk. i humbly request for a rule that all non simpsons related comments be deleted or repeating offences will lead to a ban etc.

Admin: *sigh* I try.. I really do.. everyone posts about non simpsons things though and i try to clean up as much as possible.

I believe no matter what religion you follow, or even if you're an atheist, as long as you are a good person you'll be fine. Why can't everyone see it like that?"

I sincerely hope that last sentence was ironic otherwise I laugh at your expense.

This is why Im glad Im anti-religious.Most people that practice almost any religion turns out to be a hypocritical bigot. They should add an 11th commandment to the 10 already existing commandments and list this one as number 1 on the list. "Thou shall keep thy religion to thyself"

"One of the few episodes that use other religions than catholic"

If you are talking about every time the simpsons go to church/talk about god/etc...."A Guest" you are wrong.
The Simpsons are Christians, but they attend "the first church of springfeld", which is NOT catholic. It is Presbylutheran. If you recall, there is an episode in which homer and bart begin going to a catholic church and it upsets Marge very much.
Also, if you go look at Simpsonswiki.com you can see that many religions are represented throughout the show.

Maybe you should know your simpsons before you make those comments? just a thought.

Also, about Loves_lisa 17 everybody, i think they were just saying that according to MARGES religion, she thinks that lisa may go to hell. Because according to the christian relgions, when put simply, if you do not accept god/jesus into your life then you WILL go to hell. So it would make sense that marge would get so upset.
